This policy explains what we collect, why, and what you can ask us to do about it. It covers yourwaterreport.com, the result checker at /test-results/ and the report app at /app/.
The short version
- You can read every page and check your test results without giving us anything.
- What you type into the result checker stays in your browser unless you choose to save it.
- If you do save results, we never publish your name, address or exact sample date.
- You can ask us to delete anything we hold about you.
What we collect
When you are just reading
- Analytics. We use Google Analytics (GA4) to see which pages people visit and which buttons they use. It is aggregated, and we do not use it to identify you.
- Searches. A ZIP code or county name typed into a search box is used to show you the right page. We do not store individual searches.
When you check test results
The result checker runs entirely in your browser. Your numbers are compared with published standards on your own device. They are not sent to us, and we cannot see them, unless you tick a box and press save.
If you choose to save them, we store:
- the contaminants, values, units and qualifiers (such as “not detected”) you entered;
- the county, state, sample date, and whether the sample was taken before or after treatment, if you told us;
- any well details you chose to add, such as depth or year drilled;
- a one-way fingerprint of your IP address, used only to stop automated flooding. We do not store the address itself, and the fingerprint cannot be turned back into one.
When you create an account
- Your email address, so we can save results to you and send retest reminders.
- Your Google account identity, if you sign in that way instead of with an email link. We receive your name and email address from Google, never your password.
- Your street address and approximate coordinates, if you enter them in the app for a more precise county report. This stays in your private account and is never published.
- Lab report files, if you upload a PDF or a photo of your report.
Alerts
If you sign up for water quality alerts, we store your email address to send them. Every alert email has an unsubscribe link.
Who else handles your data
These providers process data on our behalf and may not use it for their own purposes.
- Supabase — database, file storage and sign-in.
- Anthropic — if you upload a lab report, the file is sent to Anthropic’s API so the values can be read out of it. You review and confirm every value before it is saved.
- Google — Analytics, and sign-in if you choose Google.
- Cloudflare — spam protection, described below.
- Brevo — sending email.
- Hostinger — web hosting.
Spam protection
We use Cloudflare Turnstile to tell real visitors from automated ones when results are submitted. Turnstile runs in the background and collects limited technical information about your browser and connection for that purpose. It does not use that information to build an advertising profile of you. See Cloudflare’s Turnstile Privacy Addendum for what it collects.
Sharing your results with other well owners
When you save results, we ask separately — with the boxes unticked — whether you are willing to share them. Nothing is shared unless you tick a box.
- County numbers. Your results can be added to the figures we show for your county, so other well owners can see what is typical nearby.
- Research. Your results can be shared with researchers and public health agencies.
The shared copy is stripped down first. It holds the county, the year, the contaminant, the value, and whether the sample was treated. It does not hold your name, email address, street address, coordinates or the exact date. We also do not show community figures for a county until enough people have contributed that no single result can be picked out.
Results contributed by well owners are kept separate from official government monitoring data and labelled as self-reported. They are not mixed into the government figures on county pages.
You can withdraw a contribution at any time by contacting us.
What we don’t do
- We do not sell your personal information.
- We do not publish your name, address or exact sample date.
- We do not use your results to advertise to you.
- We do not require an account to read the site or to interpret your results.
How long we keep things
- Saved results — until you ask us to delete them, or you delete your account.
- Uploaded lab report files — we keep the file so you can refer back to it. If you would rather we deleted it once the values have been read out, ask us and we will remove it.
- Alert emails — until you unsubscribe.
- Analytics — according to Google’s retention settings.
Your choices
Wherever you live, you can ask us to:
- tell you what we hold about you;
- correct it;
- delete it;
- stop sharing your contributed results;
- stop emailing you.
Use the contact page and we will act on it. If you live in a state with its own privacy law — California, Virginia, Texas, Minnesota and New Jersey among others — you have these rights by law, and we will not treat you differently for using them.
You can also opt out of Google Analytics with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.
Cookies and browser storage
Google Analytics places cookies to count unique visitors and sessions. The result checker uses your browser’s own storage to hold your results between steps, and to remember a single-use code if you choose to attach saved results to an account. That storage stays on your device.
Children
This site is meant for adults responsible for a water supply. We do not knowingly collect information from children under 13.
Third-party links
We link to external sites such as state health departments, testing labs and government databases. We are not responsible for their privacy practices.
Affiliate links
Testing and treatment recommendations include affiliate links. If you buy through one, we may receive a commission at no extra cost to you. This does not affect our recommendations, which are based on local data.
Not medical advice
Our interpretations compare your numbers with published federal and state standards. They are not medical, engineering or legal advice. For a health decision, speak to your county health department or a licensed water professional.
Changes
If we change how we use your results, we will update this page and the date at the top. Where a change affects something you agreed to, we will ask again rather than assume.
